In the 1980s, the Ministry of National Defense of the GDR introduced a new camouflage coating for the NVA with the regulation "Distortion coatings on combat technology, armament and equipment". The regulation distinguished a three-tone summer and a two-tone winter coat of paint to be applied to all combat and combat support vehicles.
