A-176 was assigned to Attack Carrier Air Wing 10 (CVW-10) aboard the Intrepid for a deployment to Vietnam from 4 April to 21 November 1966. Lt.(jg) William T. Patton of VA-176 shot down a North Vietnamese Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-17 on 9 October 1966.
